The town is located on the River Segura and benefits from unique irrigation through historic aqueducts that enable the cultivation of rice. Caravaca de la Cruz is a holy city in the Spanish region of Murcia, known for the relic of the Holy Cross and as a place of pilgrimage, just 15 kilometres away. The city was recognised by the Pope in 1998 as one of five holy cities, with a perpetual jubilee year every seven years. Its historical importance is reflected in a medieval castle, which houses the chapel of St Vera Cruz, as well as traces of Iberian, Roman and Arab civilisations.
